Who We Are

Youth-Led Environmental Justice Organization

THREAD Initiative (Together for Rights and Sustainable Development Initiative) is a youth-led nonprofit organization advancing environmental justice and promoting the right of every person to live in a safe, healthy and sustainable environment.

Founded 2017 | Nigeria

Founded in 2017, the organization initially worked to strengthen civic participation and promote rights awareness and support marginalized communities whose voices were often excluded from public discourse. While implementing these programmes, we witnessed a recurring reality: climate change and environmental degradation were quietly undermining nearly every development outcome.

Flooding displaced families. Pollution destroyed livelihoods. Unsustainable environmental practices increased poverty. Young people living in vulnerable communities faced growing uncertainty about their future. These experiences reshaped our understanding of justice.

Today, THREAD Initiative focuses on addressing the structural environmental inequalities that continue to trap communities in cycles of poverty and vulnerability. Our work centres on climate adaptation, ecosystem restoration, sustainable livelihoods, environmental governance and youth leadership because climate justice is inseparable from social and economic justice. We work alongside environmentally vulnerable communities as equal partners, co-creating practical, locally led solutions that restore ecosystems, strengthen resilience to climate change, and build sustainable livelihoods for people whose lives depend on healthy natural environments.

Our Purpose

Mission & Vision

Our Mission

To advance environmental justice by empowering youth and environmentally vulnerable communities to lead climate action, restore ecosystems, strengthen sustainable livelihoods and influence policies that promote an inclusive, resilient and sustainable future.

Our Vision

THREAD Initiative envisions a Nigeria where environmentally vulnerable communities, particularly coastal populations, young people and women are no longer defined by climate vulnerability, but by resilience, opportunity and leadership in shaping a sustainable future. We aspire to build climate-smart communities that thrive both ecologically and economically while influencing national and global climate action with solutions grounded in local realities.

Leadership

Youth-Led Organization

Young people are not simply beneficiaries of our programmes, they lead them

THREAD Initiative was established as a youth-led organization and continues to be governed by the belief that sustainable development is strongest when young people are trusted with leadership and decision-making responsibilities.

Board Leadership

The majority of our Board of Trustees, management team and programme staff are young professionals with diverse expertise in environmental sustainability, climate policy, community development, research, advocacy and project management.

Youth Advisory Council

Our Youth Advisory Council strengthens accountability by ensuring young voices remain central to organizational planning, programme design and strategic decision-making.

Emerging Leaders

Beyond our internal leadership, we nurture emerging climate leaders through structured mentorship, practical learning opportunities and youth fellowship programmes that prepare young people to influence policy, mobilize communities and design innovative climate solutions.

By investing in youth leadership today, we are helping build the next generation of environmental leaders Nigeria needs.

Our Foundation

What Motivates Us

Our work is inspired by the people living on the frontline of climate change. From fishing communities losing their livelihoods to rising sea levels, to families repeatedly displaced by floods, to young people whose futures are threatened by environmental degradation, these experiences remind us that climate change is ultimately about people.

We are motivated by the belief that communities already possess valuable knowledge, resilience and innovation. What they often lack are equitable opportunities, resources and platforms to transform these strengths into lasting solutions. THREAD Initiative exists to bridge that gap.
